7 April ~ reading journals of the early 2012 PCT hikers

Charles here. And some of our fellow PCT hikers are out on the trail already. In fact, some have been on the trail for a couple of weeks! Bravi. We still have thirteen days to go before we step out ~ but ooooooh, are we wishing we were there now. We're loving reading the journal entries. Thank you for keeping us in the loop -- a loop that's drawing us closer.

So thinking of you, good hikers on the Great Trail, I thought of a meditation by the famous 20th century Soto Zen priest and roshi, Kobun Chino:

"Immediately after you stand on the peak of a mountain,
you step forward and begin to climb a higher mountain,
which is down below."

I expect the fullness of that metaphor is something all of you are coming to feel in your bones. If not yet, then soon.

And thinking of all you hikers and angels and lovers of the Trail whom we will be meeting, I offer something from Maya Soetoro-Ng, President Obama's half-sister, as she recalled their mother:

“She felt that somehow, wandering through uncharted territory, we might stumble upon something that would, in an instant, seem to represent who we are at the core. That was very much her philosophy of life — to not be limited by fear or narrow definitions, to not build walls around ourselves and to do our best to find kinship and beauty in unexpected places.”

I suspect in one way or another many of us may find we have this in common, this line of fire that is the trail, that connects us, and along which we wander through "uncharted territory ... to do our best to find kinship and beauty in unexpected places."

Can't wait to see you.

Cheers.

  1. Hi Charles! Good to find you. Have you found any really intriguing blogs out there from years gone by? Me, I first heard about the PCT a few years back when I read Catra Corbett's PCT blog: http://catrapct.blogspot.ca/ She's an interesting gal. This year, I'll be toeing the "start line" of the PCT, but I'll be a lonely girl starting at the Northern Terminus on August 1st. Looking forward to following your adventure!

    1. Woah - you're an honest-to-goodness SOBO? That's nuts. And you'll be walking (or running?) south through a fast-forwarding autumn into winter. Crazy. I can't wait to hear about it.

Erin's blog "Wired" from last year was the technologically most fun. We followed GQ (Duncan) throughout his blogs last year -- his inspiring attitude throughout and really insightful advice at the end of his blog, have helped us get psyched and prepped. There are SO many blogs out there. Geez. Have you seen "New Nomad"'s blog? She hasn't started the trail yet, but has a huge journal full of some really funny, quirky, true and clever reflections, insights, and observations. She'll be at KO, so it'll be fun to get to know her.
